The didgeridoo produces a deep drone typically around 50-80 Hz. One of the world's oldest instruments (40,000+ years). Rich in overtones through vocal tract shaping (circular breathing). The low drone can induce meditative states.
Large Tibetan singing bowls typically produce fundamental tones around 110-200 Hz. Made of bronze alloy (traditionally 7 metals). Rich in overtones and harmonics. Used for meditation and sound baths.
Sun gong tuned to Cousto’s solar tone limit value. Powerful, radiant tone quality used in sound healing for vitality and solar plexus work.
The 128 Hz "Otto" tuning fork (C3) is widely used in sound healing, placed directly on the body. Also used medically in bone conduction hearing tests. C128 = 2^7 Hz.
Paiste planetary gongs are tuned to cosmic octave frequencies calculated by Hans Cousto. The Earth gong (136.10 Hz) corresponds to the OM frequency. Rich, complex overtone structure.
Pluto gong for deep transformation and shadow work. This entry uses the current 140.64 Hz tuning rather than the older 140.25 Hz value.
Mercury gong tuned to Mercury's orbital period. Associated with communication, intellect, and mental agility. Developed through Jens Zygar's collaboration with Paiste.
Mars gong with a dynamic, energizing tone. Used for activating will, courage, and breaking through stagnation in therapeutic contexts.
Saturn gong with a structured, sobering tone. Used for focus, discipline, and karmic work. Represents the principle of form and limitation.
Chiron gong tuned to the "wounded healer" asteroid. Used for working with core wounds and the teacher archetype. Chiron orbits between Saturn and Uranus.
Gong tuned to the great cosmic cycle of the precession of the equinoxes (approximately 25,920 years). The largest cosmic cycle used in planetary gong work.
Jupiter gong tuned to the largest planet's orbit. Rich, expansive tone associated with abundance, wisdom, and generosity.
Sidereal day gong tuned to Earth's rotation relative to the stars. Slightly faster than the solar day. Grounding, physical vitality.
Uranus gong tuned to the planet of innovation and awakening. Associated with sudden insight, freedom, and breaking patterns.
Moon gong tuned to the synodic lunar cycle. Gentle, flowing tone. Used for emotional healing and working with the subconscious.
Neptune gong with a dreamy, dissolving quality. Used for spiritual transcendence, intuition, and deep meditation.
The monochord was Pythagoras' tool for discovering the mathematics of music (~500 BCE). Modern therapeutic monochords (sound beds) have many strings tuned to the same note, creating a rich overtone cloud when played simultaneously.
Venus gong with a warm, harmonious tone. Associated with love, beauty, and heart-centered work. One of the most popular planetary gongs for therapeutic use.
Medium Tibetan bowls typically resonate around 250-400 Hz. Produce a warm, enveloping tone with multiple overtones beating against each other, creating the characteristic "singing" effect.
Crystal singing bowls are made from 99.99% pure quartz crystal. C note bowls are associated with the root chakra in sound healing. Produce a pure, sustained tone with very few overtones compared to metal bowls.
C256 tuning fork is used in medical diagnostics (Weber and Rinne tests). Also called "scientific pitch" or "philosopher's C." C256 = 2^8 Hz, making octave relationships mathematically clean.
A small bellows-driven reed organ producing sustained drone tones. Essential in Indian classical music to establish the tonic (Sa). Used in sound healing for vocal toning and chanting support.
The modern international standard for concert pitch. A4 = 440 Hz was established by ISO in 1975. Used to tune all orchestral instruments. Some musicians advocate for A432 instead.
Small Tibetan bowls produce higher fundamentals (400-800 Hz). Bright, penetrating tone. Used for upper chakra work in healing traditions.
