Hans Cousto · The Cosmic Octave
From Orbit
to Tone
to Color
Double a frequency and you get the same note, one octave up. Hans Cousto applied that to orbits: keep doubling, and a year becomes a tone, and then a color.
Cousto’s idea
Giving each note a color
Double any musical note about 40 times and the number falls in the range of visible light. Cousto uses that to pair each note with a color. It is a way of pairing numbers, not a finding about how we see or hear.

The Full Spectrum
Seven ranges of
frequency
From a planet’s orbit to a gamma ray, every frequency can be written on one scale, and doubling moves you along it. The zones below are paired with Jean Gebser’s structures of consciousness, from the Archaic to the Integral. The pairing is this page’s idea. It is not a finding.
Earth, Moon and Sun cycles
The slowest rhythms we can measure
The Earth goes around the Sun once a year: a frequency of 3.17 × 10⁻⁸ Hz. The activity of the Sun rises and falls about every 11 years. Nobody can hear or see rhythms this slow. Hans Cousto’s method doubles them, again and again, until they reach the range of hearing, and further, until they reach the range of light.
One trip around the Sun. The starting point for the Earth-year tone
About 11 years: sunspots rise and fall, and the Sun’s magnetic field reverses
25,920 years: the traditional figure for the precession of the equinoxes. The measured rate gives about 25,772 years
Body rhythms
Heartbeat, breath and the daily clock
The body runs on rhythms too. The daily clock follows the cycle of day and night. At rest, breathing runs at about 0.25 Hz and the heart at about 1.2 Hz. This page pairs this range with what Jean Gebser called the Magic structure of consciousness, in which people do not yet feel separate from nature. The pairing is an idea, not a finding.
Brainwave bands
Electrical rhythms of the brain
EEG recordings are described in bands: delta, theta, alpha, beta and gamma. Where one band ends and the next begins is a convention. This page pairs each band with one of Gebser’s structures of consciousness: delta with the Archaic, theta with the Magic, alpha with the Mythical, beta with the Mental, gamma with the Integral. The pairing is proposed here for comparison and has not been tested. The first mode of Schumann resonance, near 7.8 Hz, falls where the theta and alpha bands meet. It is a radio wave in the atmosphere, not a brain rhythm. The two numbers happen to be close.

The range of hearing
Where a cycle becomes a tone
This is the range people can hear, and where Cousto’s method gives a tone you can tune an instrument to. The Earth year, doubled 32 times, comes to 136.10 Hz, a C♯. Cousto identifies it with OM. The synodic month comes to 210.42 Hz, a G♯. Each cycle in his tables has a tone, a note and a color. Planet gongs are tuned to these tones.

Radio, microwaves, infrared
Beyond hearing
Sound stops being audible above about 20 kHz. Radio waves, microwaves and infrared are a different kind of wave: electromagnetic, not sound. They are measured in the same unit, hertz, and Cousto’s doubling carries on through them toward light. This page pairs this range with Gebser’s Mental structure of consciousness: the habit of measuring and classifying. The pairing is an idea, not a finding.
A value reported by Hans Baumer. Cousto relates it to the Earth's rotation: a musical fourth above an octave of the sidereal-day tone, not an octave. Mainstream description: sferics are broadband impulses from lightning, with most energy near 5 kHz.
United States: 535–1705 kHz. Europe, Africa and Asia: 526.5–1606.5 kHz
Visible light
Where a tone becomes a color
Double an audible tone about forty more times and the number lands in the range of visible light. C♯, the Earth-year tone, lands near blue-green at 501 nm. F, the Platonic Year tone, lands at the violet edge. Cousto uses this to give each tone a color. It is a way of pairing numbers. It does not show that a tone and a color are felt as the same thing.

Beyond light
Ultraviolet, X-rays, gamma rays
Above violet, frequency keeps rising through ultraviolet, X-rays and gamma rays. Cousto places one claim here: a DNA “resonance” at 351 nm, which he relates to the Earth's rotation. His source is a personal communication from F.-A. Popp, and no publication of the figure was found. This page includes the claim for study and comparison, not as a settled claim that genetics is governed by one simple musical mapping.
The 24-hour day doubled 66 times: 854.02 THz, 351.04 nm. Cousto reports a DNA resonance here, citing a personal communication from F.-A. Popp. No publication of it was found. DNA's measured UV absorption maximum is about 260 nm.

Among the highest frequencies observed
Cousto’s argument, in short: the octave links everything that oscillates. Double a rhythm often enough and what could not be heard becomes a tone, and what could not be seen becomes a color.
